ISDN SmoothWall kit README

WARNING: WORK IN PROGRESS!!!

This is a VERY rough guide to getting SmoothWall working to support ISDN
cards.

Firstly, the files in this kit do not in anyway assit with setting up the
hardware. You must know what module and parameters you need to load. The
standard smoothwall comes with all isdn modules (and has done since the
beginning). Add a line to /etc/rc.d/rc.network to load the correct module.
For Eicon Diva cards in europe, you might use a line like:

modprobe hisax protocol=2 type=35

Afterwards, reboot the smoothwall box and verify that the module is loaded
properly (lsmod).

Next you need to unpack the two tar.gz on your smoothwall box, from /. The
programs tarball contains the ISDN control programs and ipppd daemon, as
well as manpages, etc. This is essentially a standard isdn4linux rpm
converted to a tarball.

The second tar.gz is a collection of new cgi and other scripts. New ppp-on
and ppp-off control ISDN, as well as a slighly modified pppsetup.cgi and
index.cgi. One nice thing is it should be easy to have a ISDN profile and a
normal modem one, and have both a ISDN card and a modem connected. If one
fails, you can use the other without and fiddling with the hardware; just
change the profile.

Problems:

There are currently two big problems with ISDN and SmoothWall. If you can
help, do get in touch.

1. No persistnat connections. If the line is dropped from the remote end,
there is no way to automatically redial.

2. No userpeerdns option. You MUST specify DNS servers, as there is
currently no way to get the ISPs DNS settings automatically.

One other important note:

I do not have an ISDN connection! A previous version (for SmoothWall 0.9.2)
was hacked to work with ISDN successfully. I've updated those scripts and
included them here. They *should* work. But this is a work in progress, so
don't be suprised if you have to fiddle.
