FMV is being used to deliver the video material. CD-I platforms are cheaper than its existing interactive video workstations and discs cost less to duplicate. New CD-I training titles are being produced like one to train Chrysler "service technicians" on ABS braking (being produced by Ross Roy Inc a Detroit ad agency group). ========================================================================== 4) Cadillac Motor Car CD-I kiosk at motor shows Big Hand Productions (2226 Elm Street, Dallas, Texas 75201, USA +1-214-748-2888) are producing a CD-I based kiosk for use by Cadillac Motor Car Division at motor shows. ========================================================================== 5) Sikorsky using CD-I for helicopter training and maintenance American aircraft manufacturer Sikorsky are to co-operate with Philips in the development and marketing of CD-I technology for maintaining and repairing helicopters. The CD-I application will eliminate the need for enormous amounts of paperwork that usually accompanies orders and provide information on maintenance and repair of helicopters. It will provide a low cost reference system, which will be combined with Sikorsky's patented qualitative reasoning system, drawing on years of experience and adding the dimension of artificial deep reasoning from an embedded knowledge of the system. ========================================================================== 6) Bell Atlantic CD-I telephone directory Capitol Multimedia (2121 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington DC 20003, USA +1-202-965-7800) have developed a CD-I telephone directory for Bell Atlantic. This will be tested in 300 homes in a 6 month trial. The single disc contains over 1 million residential and 400,000 business listings plus 1,000 display advertisements, some of which include audio and video effects. ========================================================================== 7) GTE ImagiTrek, Discovery Channel & World Book Inc test CD-I with Interactive TV system The system will allow users to access information from a CD-I disc while viewing a live TV program - eg. interactively accessing player performance statistics during baseball matches etc. ========================================================================== 8) Tissot using CD-I for Swiss watch sales Swiss watch manufacturer Tissot is using CD-I to provide information on its watches in 300 European jewellery outlets from June 1993. ========================================================================== 9) US National Library of Medicine - Cervical Cancer title The US National Library of Medicine and Multimedia Software (Suite 202, 6 East Street, Frederick, Maryland 21701 USA +1-301-695-9300) are producing a CD-I titles "Cervical Cancer: Success in Sight". The programme is aimed at health professionals involved in cervical cancer screening. ========================================================================== 10) National Disability Information Project using CD-I A CD-I disc providing information for deaf and disabled people is being tested in the UK, in doctor's surgeries, libraries and offices of Gateshead Council on Disability. It is part of the Gateshead Disability Information Project which is funded over three years by the Department of Health. The disc includes information in British Sign Language, spoken English and subtitles. It has been produced in consultation with local disabled and deaf people by AIRS (Central Library, Prince Consort Road, Gateshead NE8 4LN UK, +44-91-4773478). ========================================================================== 11) Bristol-Myers Squibb - pharmaceutical CD-I Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) are planning a series of programmes to keep doctors up-to-date with the latest advances in pharmaceuticals and treatments, the first to cover cancer treatment and includes a commentary from 12 medical experts. ========================================================================== 12) Searle Canada - pharmaceutical CD-I Searle are planning a CD-I disc aimed at doctors studying hypertension. ========================================================================== 13) ICI Pharmaceuticals - Zestril CD-I disc ICI Pharmaceuticals uses CD-I to bring members of the medical profession up-to-date on blood pressure issues while at the same time informing them about the new drug, Zestril. The CD-I disc discusses the importance of 24-hour blood pressure control and shows how the new drug can assist. The disc combines audio, still images, and graphics in a series of short presentations. At any time the doctor can continue with the subject or branch to an associated topic of information. ICI's own sales force has been trained by the disc, and is now using it in sales presentations throughout the world. ========================================================================== 14) Agfa using CD-I for new X-ray camera sales The famous photo-film company Agfa has used CD-I to prepare for the introduction of a new X-ray camera. Sales and technical staff anywhere in the world can now be fully briefed on the new camera's features and benefits without travelling to the company's product development centre. ========================================================================== 15) Allen Visual Systems Allen Visual Systems (US) are producing a series of CD-I titles on medical education. ========================================================================== 16) Forbes using Sony CD-I portable for ad sales Forbes business magazine has purchased 35 Sony portable CD-I players to make sales presentations. The special Forbes disc containing 11 portfolios was developed by Murray Communications (Blairstown, NJ, US +1-800-821-6446) in six weeks using the MediaMogul authoring program on an Apple Macintosh. ========================================================================== 17) Dulux paint CD-I disc An FMV point-of-information CD-I programme has been produced for Dulux paint (owned by ICI) by Valkieser Multi Media (Gravelandsweg 80A, Hilversum 1217, Netherlands +31-35-234858). ========================================================================== 18) Wilson Learning - Advancing Team Performance title Training specialist Wilson Learning (7600 Flying Cloud Drive, Eden Prairie, Minnesota 55344, USA +1-612-944-2880) has developed a generic CD-I title called "Advancing Team Performance". ========================================================================== 19) Spectradyne hotel guest information CD-I application A system using CD-I technology for giving hotel guests information interactively has been developed by the hotel entertainment specialists Spectradyne and US West (4643 South Ulster Street, Suite 1300 Denver, Colorado 80237, USA +1-303-488-7080). A channel on a room TV set is connected to a bank of CD-I players in the hotel basement, giving an interactive guide to the locality. The system is being tested in 1,000 hotel rooms in San Francisco. ========================================================================== 20) Japanese Kyocera portable professional CD-I player Kyocera (2-14-9 Tamagawadai, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo 158, Japan +81-3-3708-3111) have launched a portable professional CD-I player (6.7in x 6ins x 2ins) with no LCD screen. It is being used by the sales team of Japan's largest bed company. An electric power plant engineering firm is using it for safety training, the training results are recorded in an exterior memory card via an RS232 connection on the player. [Philips and Sony also produce portable CD-I players for the professional market]. ========================================================================== 21) Japanese Maspro CD-I car navigation system using GPS The first car navigation system based on CD-I has been launched by Maspro Denkoh Corporation (Asada, Nisshin-cho, Aichi-gun, Nagoya-shigai, Japan). It uses GPS satellite signals for navigation but can also play conventional CD-I titles. ========================================================================== 22) Foreign Language CD-I discs from Philips Language Learning Systems Philips Language Learning Systems have launched Language Director, the first professional language courses using CD-I. Discs are available in English, French, German (and Spanish level 1 from November, level 2 in December). Packages contain 3 discs, one explains in the users native language how the course should be used, while the other two contain the lessons. The discs feature immediate random access to sound and pictures, built-in proficiency tests, chapter tests, visual clues and symbols that give hints to the contents of the following sentence, animations that underline the meaning of a sentence, cartoon-type bubbles that indicate speech and its content, music to relax the learner, interactive dialogue lessons with audio multiple choice based on the selection of different audio answers. An easy to use word dictionary and picture dictionary is included. To complete one level should take between 35 and 50 hours and after two levels the user should be able to carry out normal conversations and daily business in the language. Level 1 has 50 lessons with approx 500 words, Level 2 has 39 lessons and 26 everyday situations also with approx 500 words. Packages are available with the guide discs in 14 languages. The TeleCD system incorporates a phone modem into existing CD-I players to allow links to live databases, creating an electronic "catalogue" where consumers can buy products. TeleCD will initially target the professional market, such as catalogue and direct-mail vendors. The system offers substantial cost savings to catalogue publishers by concentrating data on a lightweight disc and allowing them to make updates through one central databank. The TeleCD system would be compatible with phone systems worldwide. TeleCD uses are seen in outlets like travel agencies, where customers who know what they want could make purchases without waiting for sales assistance. Eventually TeleCD could offer home shopping services and have uses in distance learning. The TeleCD adaptor which should retail in the Netherlands at about 200 guilders. ========================================================================== 24) EEC funded CD-I home shopping trials with Freemans, Page & Moy, Barclays. In the Homestead project part funded by the EEC Esprit program Philips is testing home shopping using CD-I in the UK & Belgium. Catalogue giants Freemans, Page & Moy travel agents, Barclays Bank and the Belgian software company The Little Big One are working with Philips to produce CD-I discs carrying information and graphics on goods. Orders will be placed by telephone. Trials include features such as allowing shoppers to see graphics/video clips of garments with details of prices, sizes and alternative colours etc. The home shopping application is seen as "yet another application" for the format. ========================================================================== 25) Turkey to use CD-I for Olympic bid promotion Turkey will be using CD-I to promote its bid for the 2000 Summer Olympics. A CD-I kiosk will be used in hotel lobbies, with programmes in English, French and Spanish when the International Olympic Committee visits. ========================================================================== 26) "Challenge - The CD-I": Duke of Edinburgh's Award CD-I by Freeland Studios Freeland Studios are producing a CD-I disc to give an interactive introduction to everything the Duke of Edinburgh's Award can offer. An "Overview" section offers general views about the Award, a "Facts" section gives all the details about the Award, a "Peoples" section presents six different people speaking openly about their personal experiences of the Award and a "Games" section offers six games based on some of the many different challenges posed by the Award scheme. ========================================================================== 27) Skillmaster working on training discs for building maintenance Skillmaster are working on a series of 15 hands-on vocational training discs for teaching building maintenance and repair. ========================================================================== 28) Lancaster Group introduces the first CD-I titles for the cosmetics industry The programs, created by psychologist Dr. Joachim Mensing, will appear at over 100 department stores in the U.S. beginning September '93. Multi-language versions will be ready for the European market in Spring '94. The initial release, "Personalized Makeup," is for the Monteil Paris line and consists of one compact disc to be played on the Philips portable player and viewed on television monitors. The program produces personalized product recommendations for the cosmetics and fragrance customer, enhancing the selection process. The high design elements of this program are extended to a variety of collateral materials. Other titles in production include new product launches and catalogues. CD ONE is working on two CD-I projects in Germany: A) a political/art-project, dealing with the german reunification, actions against non-german citizens and fascistic motivated crimes. About 4.000 dpa-messages for the time from 03.10.1990 to 03.10.1993. Funded by the German government and the city of Berlin. Starting october 25th. B) Three CD-I's for a museum in Stuttgart (south germany), showing the main street changing through the last 150 years. Working on a CD-I multimedia database tool: A low cost approach to putting CD-I multimedia data bases on CD-I. Can put thousands of DYUV images each with 8 seconds of audio on a disc indexed to a variety of indices. Once a search has been conducted (a few seconds), the images found are displayed. If certain of those images pass a visual scanning, one can peruse linked audio and images and soon FMV. Two thousand images and about 8 seconds of audio each can be placed on CD-I for about $4K. Spinnaker Communications has recently finished a CD-I Sales Catalog and Sales Training Title for PTI, a manufacturer of Physical Therapy devices used in Ultrasound and Electrostimulation Therapy. PTI's distributors throughout the US are now equipped with players (mostly portable) and are taking the discs out into the field. Spinnaker are also near completion of a training program for a U.S. Federal Government agency. This program features "just-in-time" review segments, five interactive exercises, and a realistic interactive scenario. The user's performance on a pre-test determines the sections of the course they must complete. Their performance throughout the course is tracked on a floppy. The discs cover aspects of mathematics and geography for stage 2 of the UK National Curriculum. They are due for release later in 93. b) HarperCollins will be releasing two UK National Curriculum CDi discs covering science for stage 2 and reading for stage 1.
